Is it safe to leave your laptop in a hotel room?
It can be, but the risk stays with you. We found no official figure for how often laptops go missing from hotel rooms, and the hotel's legal duty is often capped well below what a laptop costs. Take it with you if you can. If you can't, use a safe, lock it or turn it off, and check what your insurance asks for.

What this covers
How risky is it to leave a laptop in a hotel room?
Nobody can give you a good number. We looked for an official national figure for laptop theft from hotel rooms and could not find one. Be wary of any article that quotes a percentage without saying where it came from.
What we do have is advice from government agencies. CISA, the US cyber security agency, says: “Meal times are optimum times for thieves to check hotel rooms for unattended laptops.” That page was last revised in 2019, but the point still holds: the risk is highest when guests are predictably out.
Beyond that, agencies disagree about the safe, because they are worried about different things:
Smartraveller, the Australian government's travel advice site, says to think about leaving valuables “in the hotel safe” rather than taking them out with you. Its concern is everyday theft.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre tells travelling staff to never leave devices unattended, and says that includes “leaving them in hotel safes”. Its concern is someone getting at the data.
So for a holiday laptop, a safe is reasonable. For a work laptop with sensitive data on it, follow your employer's rules, and expect them to say keep it with you.
Is the hotel responsible if your laptop is stolen?
Often only up to a low limit. Many places have an old law that caps what a hotel must pay for a guest's belongings. Here is what four of them say about property in your room.
| Place | Limit for belongings in your room | When that changes |
|---|---|---|
| New York | $500 | No cap if the loss came through the hotel's fault or negligence |
| California | $250 per item, $1,000 in total | If the hotel agreed in writing to more |
| Florida | Nothing, unless the hotel was at fault or negligent; then $500 | Up to $1,000 if you filed an inventory with the hotel first |
| United Kingdom | £50 per item, £100 in total | No cap if staff were at fault, or if you handed it in for safe keeping |
Those are the figures in each law as published on the official site, checked 4 November 2026. The laptop is our reading: none of these laws names laptops, so we treated one as ordinary personal property. A lawyer or court may see a given case differently, and other states and countries have their own rules. This is not legal advice.
Two things are worth knowing. In the UK the cap only applies if the hotel displays the required notice near its reception. And in New York, a hotel may not “post a notice disclaiming or misrepresenting” its liability under that section, so a sign saying the hotel is not responsible is not the last word there.
The laws above say little about in-room safes. We found nothing in them that says using one raises the limit. Before leaving a valuable laptop, ask the front desk whether it can hold it and give you a written receipt.
Does insurance cover a laptop stolen from a hotel room?
Maybe, and the safe can matter here. Smartraveller says standard travel insurance typically doesn't cover items that “were left unattended”, or items if “you did not store them in a hotel safe when one was available”. It is writing about Australian policies, and yours may differ, so read the section on theft before you go. Also check any limit per item, since a policy may pay less than a new MacBook costs.
Can hotel staff open your room safe?
Usually a manager can, by design. Guests forget codes, so hotel safes are built with a way around them. Three makers say so in their own documents:
Summit HSF10B: a "6-digit code set by management" to unlock the safe if a guest loses the code, plus an override key for property managers.
SentrySafe HL100ES: a "master override key" for backup access.
Barska: a master code "for override opening by hotel manager", a handheld unit, and an emergency key.
We don't know which brand your hotel uses, and this says nothing about whether staff misuse these tools. It only means a room safe keeps out a passing thief, not everyone. Barska's manual also describes an audit trail feature, so some safes keep a record that the hotel can download. If something goes missing from one, ask about it.
Will a MacBook fit in a hotel safe?
Some will and some won't. Here are Apple's published sizes for the current models.
| MacBook | Width (in) | Depth (in) | Height (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air 13 inch | 11.97 | 8.46 | 0.44 |
| Air 15 inch | 13.40 | 9.35 | 0.45 |
| Pro 14 inch | 12.31 | 8.71 | 0.61 |
| Pro 16 inch | 14.01 | 9.77 | 0.66 |
For comparison, Summit gives the inside of its HSF10B as 16 1/4 inches wide and 14 3/8 inches deep, and says it holds 16 inch laptops. SentrySafe says its HL100ES “fits up to a 17 inch laptop”. All four MacBooks would lie flat in either, by our arithmetic.
We have no figures on how many hotels use a safe that size, and smaller ones exist. Check the safe when you arrive, and measure the door opening too, because it can be narrower than the inside.
Where should you leave your laptop in a hotel?
Here is how the usual options compare, best first if the laptop matters to you.
| Option | Good for | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|
| Keep it with you | Stops a theft from the room; CISA says to keep it with you | You carry it, and it can be lost or taken while you are out |
| Front desk | A receipt, and the UK cap can go away | Not every hotel will take it; ask who can reach it |
| Room safe | Keeps it out of sight; insurers may expect it | Managers can open it; it may be too small |
| Locked suitcase | Better than on show | The whole case can be carried out |
| Cable lock | Slows a quick grab | Current MacBooks have no slot |
| Out on the desk | Nothing | The easiest one to take |
If you want a cable lock on a Mac, you need an adapter or a locking stand first. Our guide to laptop cable locks and the MacBook covers the choices. A Do Not Disturb sign may keep cleaners out, but it doesn't lock anything.
What to do before you leave the room
- Turn on FileVault if it isn't on already. Apple says it stops someone decrypting your data without your login password.
- Set a short password delay. In System Settings, open Lock Screen and set the time for “Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off”.
- Check that Find My is on. Apple says Activation Lock “is designed to prevent others from using your Mac if it's lost or stolen”, and it depends on Find My.
- Back up your files, so losing the laptop doesn't mean losing your work.
- Keep a note of the serial number somewhere other than the laptop.
- Decide whether to turn it off or let it sleep, as explained below.
- Put it in the safe or out of sight, and take the charger off the desk, since it shows a laptop is around.
Should you turn your laptop off or let it sleep?
There is a real trade-off. With FileVault on and no valid login, Apple says the internal volumes “remain encrypted”, even if the storage is removed and connected to another computer. So off is the strong choice for your data.
Asleep is the better choice for finding it. Apple says Find My works with a Mac that is asleep, but we found no Apple page saying it can locate one that is fully off. Our guide on how to track a stolen laptop goes through what works and what doesn't.
A simple rule: if you are away for an hour, sleep with a password is fine. If you are out for the day, or the data matters more than the hardware, turn it off. Apple also notes that locking the screen doesn't stop someone turning the Mac off, so a lock protects your data, not the machine.
Does a laptop alarm help in a hotel room?
Deskwatch is the app this site sells, so read this with that in mind. It works better in a cafe than in a hotel room, and here is why.
While protection is on, lifting or shoving the Mac or closing its lid plays a siren at full volume and locks the screen, and only your Touch ID or password stops it. In our tests on a MacBook Air M2, every lift set it off in under a second. That is most useful when people nearby will look up. In a hotel room, with the door shut and few people around, a thief may simply carry on. We have not tested how far the sound carries through a hotel door.
Other limits that matter in a room:
Cleaners will set it off if they move the Mac, so hang the Do Not Disturb sign or keep it out of their way.
It only works while the Mac is awake, so it uses battery. Plug it in if you can.
Don't put it in a bag or a safe with protection on. Watching with the lid shut can trap heat, and it pauses by itself if the Mac gets too warm or the battery runs low.
Holding down the power button stops any software alarm.
It won't find the Mac later. That is the job of Find My.
Where it is more useful on a trip is the lobby, the breakfast room or the airport lounge, when you look away for a moment. It costs $4.99 once. For other apps, see our guide to the best anti-theft software for a MacBook.
What to do if your laptop goes missing from your room
- Search the room and your bags first, then tell the front desk straight away.
- Ask the hotel for a written record of your report, and ask whether the safe keeps an audit trail.
- Open Find My from another device and mark the Mac as lost.
- Report it to the police with your serial number, and keep the report number.
- Change your important passwords, starting with email and your Apple Account.
- Call your travel, home or renters insurer, and give them the police report number.
Our checklist for what to do if your MacBook is stolen covers each step in detail, including what not to do in Find My.
Questions people ask
Is it safe to leave a laptop in a hotel room?
It is a risk you can lower, not remove. We found no official figure for how often it happens, but CISA warns that thieves check hotel rooms at meal times. Take the laptop with you if you can. If you can't, use a safe, and lock the Mac or turn it off first.
Can hotel staff open the safe in my room?
Usually a manager can. Safe makers such as Summit, SentrySafe and Barska build in a master code or an override key for guests who forget their code. That is a normal feature, not a sign of theft, but it means the safe is not private.
Is a hotel responsible if my laptop is stolen from my room?
Only up to a limit, and it depends where you are. New York caps it at $500 unless the hotel was at fault or negligent. California caps other personal property at $250 per item. In Florida the hotel owes nothing unless it was at fault or negligent. This is not legal advice.
Will a laptop fit in a hotel safe?
Often, but not always. A 16 inch MacBook Pro is 14.01 by 9.77 inches. Safes made for laptops, such as the SentrySafe HL100ES and Summit HSF10B, are large enough. A smaller safe may not be, so measure the door opening as well as the inside.
Does travel insurance cover a laptop stolen from a hotel room?
It depends on your policy. Australia's Smartraveller says standard policies typically don't cover items left unattended, or items you did not store in a hotel safe when one was available. Read the wording before you travel.
Should I leave my laptop on or off in a hotel room?
Off protects your data best, because the storage stays encrypted until someone logs in. Asleep keeps it findable in Find My, which Apple does not promise for a Mac that is fully off. If you stay near the room, asleep with a password is a fair choice. For a long absence, turn it off.
